In this context, the idea of risk denotes the individual likelihood of contracting the respectively tested illness over a certain period of time. As a rule, the risk is defined in terms of the coming ten years during which the illness can be contracted, as compared to healthy persons of the same age and gender. Calculations are based on studies that have already been evaluated and validated. These risk tests embody medical analyses that are extremely simple to perform and are of significance in better preventing common conditions. The large majority of them should be carried out upwards of the 40 th year of age, even earlier, and enable risks to be identified at a time when their successful treatment is still possible.

Large-scale studies have shown that risk calculators allow for far greater precision in their predictive essence than other so-called standardized check-ups (such as ECG etc.)

A wide expanse of evidence-based knowledge is available to identify and eliminate risks. However, there are two few practical outlets for implementing and applying such knowledge in daily medical routine. Admittedly, standard diagnostic testing identifies pathologic conditions, yet there is a lack of reliable information about the underlying risk or the prevalence of the disease. Preventive medicine impacts right up front; first, the in-depth analysis of the individual risk of contracting certain conditions, followed up by preventive recommendations on how to avert the disease and lower the personal risk level. By way of these tests, the risk of contracting numerous conditions from a variety of disciplines can be calculated with absolute precision, resulting in a clear health benefit for the user.

Risk calculators are made up of questions mostly relating to biographic rather than biochemical findings. The parameters thus focused are scientifically validated as “targeted risk factors” and make it possible to calculate the relative risk (the n-fold personally encountered risk as against healthy subjects of the same age and gender) or an absolute risk (risk as % for the development of the respective disease over the next ten years). Within the space of a few minutes, the doctor or an assistant can enter the required values online and immediately print out the result.
